Becoming a Brick Mason is not for everyone. It is a job that is related to construction and the conditions that are associated with the job, keeps not only the job in demand but, for those who choose to perform it. A brick mason is not only contracted to make brick. They also take care of smaller elements that are associated with brick as well. Such as; chimneys, fireplaces and other interior designs.

Brick manson workers are expected to perform in any type of weather condition and, they also have to perform many physical activities such as; bending, stretching and constantly relying on their knees. They also have to carry and prepare bricks, mix mortar (paste used to fill holes between bricks) and sometimes carry heavy materials, machines and other types of hand tools. Other duties may include; meeting with clients to discuss specifics of a job or, other types of surveying methods.

It is not uncommon for the brick mason to be very mathematically inclined. Depending on what type of masonry work they choose, reading blueprints are sometimes a must. Brick masons can choose to do residential, building or, other types of private projects. He can work for a company or, be an independent contractor, running his/her own business.

In order to begin the process of becoming a bricklayer you will first need to complete your high school degree with an emphasis on math and drafting. After that you will need to complete what is known as a journeyman’s course which usually involves a three year program working with other bricklayers to learn the craft. Bricklaying is very hard work and requires good physical strength.

To find a journeyman program or an apprenticeship you will need to visit the various contractors in your area which provide this service. Once you find one that is interested in working with you, they will provide you with the apprenticeship program and help you learn the skills that you will need to work toward your certification as a bricklayer.

During this period you may find that you need to return to school for some of the knowledge that will be needed on the job. When you complete college courses directed towards bricklaying you will not need as much on the job experience when you want to schedule your examination for the certification. In order to work as a bricklayer you need to be certified. To be certified you must learn about blueprint reading, bricklaying tools and how to perform many of the tasks that will be required such as wall partitioning.
